RefugeesCode Melbourne

Coding Workshops for Refugees, Activists, Women, Queer, Climbers, Cyclists and Everyone

What is this about?

Refugees

We are a refugee-oriented, everyone-included group.

Australia treats refugees horribly, and most people have no idea about it. Tens of thousands of refugees live here without study right, what kind of monsters take away people’s right to study??? So we provide a space for refugees to come and learn to code. Our workshops are our protest against Australian government’s cruel policies, our desire to learn and improve cannot be taken away and we will always find a way.

On the other hand, refugees are not just people who needs to be helped and excluded from everyone else. We are all capable of contributing to making where we live a better and more inclusive place. So we welcome everyone to join us and we have refugee coders here help you learn to code.

This group is for everyone who care about refugee rights. We want to build a community where we all come together and help each other.

Code

Why coding? Coding as a job pays well and offers great flexibility. If you would like to become a coder by trade, our workshops are a good starting point. If you don’t, coding can also just be another fun thing to try out. Think about pottery or knitting, making things with your hands, coding is exactly like that, except in digital space. At the end of our workshop, you will learn how to make a funny website for your friend’s birthday. We will make you rethink about coding, nerdy is the new cool.

Sounds good! How do I join?

Monthly Workshops

Every second Saturday of the month 2 - 5 PM, we run creative coding workshops on various topics like website building with HTML & CSS, interactive projects with p5.js, etc.

This will be a good start point to join our group and get into coding if you have never done it before. We have friendly volunteers to get your started and there will be some good food and chat too.

Save these dates and sign up for our workshops here.

Location: Melbourne CBD, 152 Elizabeth St but it might change, use Humantix event as source of truth.

A typical workshop looks like this:

At 2 pm you arrive at the venue, meet a small group of people (it’s usually 8 - 10 people). We sit around the table, introduce ourselves to each other and have a casual chat.

There are plenty of snacks on the table (usually corn chips, veggie sticks with dips, biscuits with cheese, some fruits and chocolates) and coffee/tea is there too. It’s a pretty comfortable environment for us to get to know each other.

Then you will start writing code, we believe people learn in their own ways so we do not do lecture style teaching, instead we give you instructions, e.g. this one for HTML & CSS, you can go through the tutorial and do things at your own pace. We encourage you to come up with your own idea and help you build it. For example, if you would like to build your own website, we take you through the design process to draft a design on paper, then you get to build it and publish it so you can share with your friends.

We usually have 1 coder : 2 participants ratio, so don’t worry if you have never done coding before, you will get plenty of hands-on help. And because everybody comes from a diverse background, we have had designers who came to learn and also helped others with designing their projects. We all like to help each other and you can contribute with your unique skill set.

At the end of the 3 hours, you will get a chance to see other people’s projects as well as demonstrate your own. And we just sit back, eat snacks and chat away…

Fortnightly Meetups

If you joined our workshops and found coding is really interesting and you just cannot get enough of it, or you started a project and want to get more help refining it, this is the place to come.

We have our fortnightly meetup on the first and third Saturday of the month 2 - 5 PM because we just can’t get enough of coding and we can’t get enough of each other.

Save the dates to your calendar from here.

The meetups are for people who want to spend more time writing code. If you would like to become a software developer, come as we have developers at various level that can help you build a career in tech.

Or if you are a coder for fun, bring your projects and just sit with us while working on it. We help each other if someone has a question, we chat and give each other suggestions.

The major difference between a meetup and a workshop is, firstly there is no snacks as we want to keep our workshops special, but if you protest we might change. But the people are just as warm and keep you fulfilled. And it’s a smaller group, usually 4 - 5 of us, and there is no structures, we just help with whatever each of us is working on at the moment.

Okay, but I have more questions

  • We believe it’s never about being easy or hard that makes us decide to do something or not, instead it’s about if something is interesting to do. And yes we do believe coding is interesting.

Coding is not hard. It’s just a craft like knitting or pottery, you can make something and share with friends within a few hours. It’s also like learning a language, instead of communicating with other people, we learn to communicate with computer and create something in the digital space.

Coding is also not easy, like any other crafts or language, it takes time to perfect your skills, and the deeper you get into it, the easier it becomes. Everybody get stuck with some problems at some point, that’s why we do it as a group, so we can help each other out and share the struggle and fun.

  • We have a strong focus on refugees, queer people and women but this group is open to anyone who cares about refugee rights in Australia and would like to learn coding. We believe different people brings different skills to the table and we can all contribute in some ways or another at different points, so we want to have a truely diverse group in all the dimensions, not only in culture, gender, but also in life experience, way of thinking, etc. And what connects us all together is our love for code and our care for other human beings.

  • We are trying to build a community through code where we help each other.

Some people might be good at coding but they need help in getting a hospitality job, others might know how to choose a good second hand car but they want to know how to become a nurse. We come together because we are all interested in coding but we can help each other in all the aspects in life with our unique experience and skills.

  • Technology is a hot topic now, come and find out what it is really about. You will learn some new skills and meet some new people at this group, as well as some fun projects to take home and show others.

Then if you really like coding and would like to do it as a career, we have people with similar experience who are keen to show you the path and help you on the way.

  • We DO NEED HELP, and you don’t have to know how to code to help. And in fact we have too many people who can code but don’t know how to do anything else like reaching out to people. We are desperate for a natural marketer to help us reach more people and get more people to join our workshops through either social media or whatever way that works. Whether you are a marketing/business development expert or you have never done it before but keen to give it a try because you care about this group like us, we want to chat to you, drop us a message on instagram or send us an email, you can find the links in the header.
